Sanghamitta Day Celebrations was held at the London Buddhist Vihara on Sunday, 11th December 2022, commencing at 9.00 am. This festival is unique to Sri Lanka as it commemorates the arrival of Sanghamitta, daughter of Emperor Asoka of India, for the purpose of establishing the Bhikkhuni Order in the island. This day is also of universal significance to Buddhists as Sanghamitta brought with her a sapling of the Bodhi Tree from Buddha Gaya. The sapling, planted at Anuradhapura in 245 BCE, is today regarded as the oldest historically authenticated tree in the world.
A number of devotees observed the Eight Precepts for the day.
After the dana, the 16th Death Anniversay remembrance of the former Head Monk, Most Venerable Dr Madagama Vajiranana Nayake Thera was performed by Ven Seelawimala.
The days event commenced with the administering of the Eight Precepts by Most Venerable Bogoda Seelawimala, followed by Meditation session conducted by Sister Ajahn Sundara, senior nun from Amaravati Monastery.
Dhamma talks were given by Ven Professor Medagoda Abhayatissa Thero and Ven Kudakathnoruwe Vineetha Thero, senior lecturers at the University of Sri Jayawardenapura, Sri Lanka.
